Mini split-system air conditioners, also known as mini splits, serve several potential applications in both residential and commercial settings. Their most common applications, however, are in multifamily homes, as retrofit add-ons for homes without existing ductwork, and in home additions and small apartments where extending the existing ductwork of a central air conditioning system is not practical.
Split air conditioning systems have two main components: an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor air-handling unit.
Advantages of Split Air Conditioners
• Ductless
• Small size
• Flexibility: great for zoning or the heating and cooling of individual rooms
• Each zone can have its own thermostat
• Capable of saving you energy and thus saving you money
• Avoid energy loss associated with ductwork, which can account for up to 30% of energy consumption
Disadvantages of Split Air Conditioners
• Cost: these systems run between $1,500-$2,000 per ton (12,000 Btu per hour) of cooling capacity
• Each indoor unit must be correctly sized: oversized or incorrectly located air-handlers can result in short-cycling, which wastes energy
• Appearance: some people may not like the appearance of the indoor unit, but then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder
• It is not easy to find qualified service people and installers for mini split systems.
