Air Conditioning Contractors of America in an Undercover Investigation

The Today Show recently aired a segment in which they conducted an undercover investigation on air conditioning repairs. With the help of members of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), the nation’s largest non-profit trade association serving the indoor environment industry, the Today Show set up a sting operation in a New Jersey home.

Unsuspecting air conditioner contractors were called to diagnose a problem and when they misdiagnosed the issue or mislead the customer, they were confronted by the Today Show team about their methods.

“I was glad to work with the Today Show to help educate the public about what they should look for in a quality contractor,” said Robert C. Ring, the Today Show’s expert consultant and a member of the ACCA. “Overall, I think this segment was an important reminder to homeowners that they have to do their homework before they call a contractor.”

About the Air Conditioning Contractors of America

The ACCA develops and publishes the national standards used by contractors to ensure quality HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair. And, as for homeowners, the ACCA suggests the following:

  1. Find a quality HVAC contractor and develop a relationship before a major repair is required.
  2. Sign up for a maintenance program. This will keep your system in tip top shape and working as efficiently as possible.
  3. Check out the ACCA’s Quality Installation Checklist at www.acca.org/consumer.
