Your Turn of the Century Home and Air Conditioning: Can it be installed?

Yes, it can!

It is completely possible to install air conditioning in a turn of the century home. Still, there are a few challenges that need to be addressed.

  1. House Design: Turn of the century homes were simply not designed for air conditioning systems. Because of this, you HVAC contractor will have to open up your walls to retrofit ductwork and other AC components.
  2. Radiator Heating: Many turn of the century homes have radiator heating systems, further limiting the usable area in which to install AC and ductwork.
  3. Construction / Remodel: Unlike air conditioning and duct installation in newer homes, retrofitting a turn of the century home with AC requires much more intrusive construction methods.

Fortunately, you do have other options. There are retro fit systems available that are specifically designed for installation in older buildings (though these systems typically cost more). The benefits of these systems include:

  • Reduced construction costs
  • Reduced installation time

Retro fit systems include:

1. High velocity systems: This consists of thin insulated tubing that can be snaked through an old house to deliver cool air.

2. Mini Split Systems: This system only requires placement of small cooling units and blowers on a room by room basis. These units are connected by thin power and coolant lines to a larger outdoor unit that consists of a compressor and fan.

These systems are fantastic alternatives to installing central air conditioning in an older home.
